Tummy Tuck / Abdominoplasty

What is Tummy Tuck?

Tummy Tuck surgery is a cosmetic procedure of removing fats and excess skin from abdomen. It is also known as Abdominoplasty

Generally Tummy Tuck or Abdominoplasty is indicated in people who have looseness of skin secondary to pregnancy or due to weight loss. People who have under gone bariatric surgery also have looseness of skin.

Unlike liposuction which involves removing only fat allowing the skin to shrink, abdominoplasty is more extensive and is associated with removal of fat, excess skin and tightening of the musculature if it is loose or has hernias.

Usually Tummy Tuck surgery is associated with liposuction of large areas like the abdomen, flanks, buttocks, thighs etc. along with removal of skin and relocating the belly button but sometimes may be associated with minor tightening of the loose skin which called as Mini Tummy Tuck. Occasionally minor additional liposuction is done after the original operation as touch up provided if indicated.

Tummy Tuck Procedure

The premarked areas are infiltrated through the access points made in the hidden areas. Liposuction is then done of all the areas and the excess skin is marked. The incision is marked within the bikini line and the excess skin is removed, the belly button is cored out. The muscles if loose are tightened in the midline and also in the lower abdomen. If there is hernia it is repaired at this time. The skin is then pulled down and stitched in the new position. The belly button is brought through good skin and the incision closed in layers over a drain. Contrary to what you may think, the belly button is not excised during the operation.

Recovery from Tummy Tuck

You will be put in a corset immediately following the surgery and has to be retained for 6 weeks. There would be a dressing on the stitch line. You would be mobilized the same day but would feel sore. The drains kept under the skin to collect body fluids would be removed once the drainage is minimum. You will be discharged from the hospital in a couple of days and will be able to walk and go about your routine activities with care.

Risks of Procedure

Just like in any other surgical procedure the Bleeding and infection rates are low. Residual fluid may remain non absorbed called as Seroma which may need to be aspirated by syringe and needle. Rarely skin necrosis, fat necrosis and delayed healing of the incisions may take place. Very rarely due to associated medical conditions like diabetes, loss of skin may require corrective procedures in the form of skin grafting. This is much more likely in people who smoke hence cessation of smoking for a few weeks is a must.

The scar which is in the bikini line initially looks very dark in the Indian skin and over a few weeks to months it fades and finally barely visible.

Mobility is very important as it pumps blood from your legs preventing a blood clot hence we want you to be out of bed the same evening or the next day. CT scan is done preoperatively to assess weakness of the muscle wall so that the decision of muscle tightening is made and any injury to deeper organs are prevented.
